Cambodia’s History
Cambodia is a country in Southeast Asia with incredible cultural wonders, scenic beauty, and welcoming, generous people. Sharing its borders with Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and the Gulf of Thailand, Cambodia is home to over 15 million people today. The ancient temple complexes of Angkor Wat in Siem Reap are the most famous and are considered to be one of the Wonders of the World, but Cambodia also holds many other fascinating treasures including many temples, lush rice fields, local industries and traditional arts and music.
For all of its beauty, Cambodia also has a dark and troubled history. For almost a century Cambodia operated under French rule, finally gaining independence in 1953 only to face more decades of civil war, unrest, and corruption. During neighboring Vietnam’s war with the US, Cambodia was heavily bombed, leading to the rise of the darkest days in its history. Under the communist Khmer Rouge regime led by Pol Pot, the country plunged into chaos as millions were displaced from their homes, the currency became worthless, and basic freedoms were banned. An estimated 2 million Cambodians, over a quarter of the population, were tortured and executed before the Khmer Rouge were overthrown in 1979.
The effects of this brutal regime and the conflicts that followed are still felt in Cambodia today. The government, education system, and healthcare system still have not recovered and poverty levels remain among the highest in Asia. Landmines left throughout the country after the wars have led to disproportionately high numbers of disabled people as well.
